It's not just local surf spots that are celebrated by the team at Bells Beach Brewing, they're happy to showcase iconic locations and images from elsewhere too. That's the case with this rice lager, a spring release named after one of Japan's most famed pieces of art, The Great Wave Off Kanagawa. It's reimagined on cans containing a beer style synonymous with Japan that's grown in popularity among craft brewers here over the past couple of years – as we examined here.
Bells Beach's version combines the flaked rice and pilsner malts with Kiwi hop varieties Wai-iti and Wakatu, although clearly the latter have been used in minimal amounts – certainly compared to the brewery's other recent lager release – as this clear pale golden beer is very much driven by its cereal malt character. Initially sweet with maybe a hint of honey, Kanagawa soon dries out rather than becoming bitter.
