Eagle Bay’s affinity for grapefruit continues with an amplified iteration of last year’s Hazy. No doubt, having a small citrus orchard onsite enables these endeavours, however head brewer Keegan Steinbacher says this isn’t the only reason.
“We love grapefruit and it ties in beautifully with the Talus hop addition,” he says of this limited release, also noting that the fruit was hand-zested for “maximum deliciousness”.
Known for its juicy pink grapefruit character, Talus is the daughter of Sabro, a potentially polarising hop – #teamSabro for this scribe – and the maternal coconut influence places subtle desiccated background notes amid the more overt bright citrus and tuned piney riposte that comes courtesy of a Southern Cross dry hop.
All of which is entertaining, but it’s the harmony that elevates the whole. That and the smooth palate arc, which renders the experience Sade-like: insert fancy glass, slinky soundtrack and sunshine filters.
NB joining Grapefruit Hazy IIPA in stores for spring is their much-loved 90 Day Pils and it’s as crispy and nuanced as ever.
