The team at Freshwater Brewing Co on Sydney's Northern Beaches made no secret of their intention to focus most of their attention in the brewhouse on brewing lagers. And as winter 2024 draws to a close, they've made their dedication to such a cause clearer still, installing a tower featuring five side-pour taps from Lukr in the Czech Republic designed to give bar staff immaculate control over how the beer arrives in your glass.
It takes the number of such taps at their home to seven and, to celebrate the installation, they've canned a Czech-inspired decoction pilsner (read about the decoction method here). You can easily see how Send It. would thrive via a Lukr pour, the moussey head encouraging the aromas – rustic honey, fresh grain, hay stacks – to unfurl.
Poured from a can, it’s once you’ve gone in for a swig that the beer's talents really shine. Amid the tasting notes on said cans is the phrase “depth of malt” and that really nails it: in conjunction with a persistent old-world bitterness, the flavours burrow deep and keep going. Presumably long enough that when you pop out on the other side of the world you find yourself in Czechia.
