Unless you’re running some kind of sophisticated scam on Boost Juice where you’re using multiple emails to get free smoothies, you only get one birthday a year. So it’s always good to go large.
Good Land have certainly done that, marking the third iteration of Good Days with the Traralgon brewers making six different beers for the big day. We’ll bring word of more of them in a follow-up post, but we figured we’d better start with where all good parties should begin: with dessert. Peakin’ was brewed with the team at Hopheads and is the kind of beer both the retailers and the brewers can’t get enough of, with the salted pastry stout featuring vanilla and pecans. It’s certainly a liquid slice of indulgence that comes across like pure chocolate cake that’s straight out of a boozy blender. That sweetness is, of course, only carried further by the vanilla and incredibly soft texture, while the strong flavour of pecans tastes as if they’ve been cooked in salted caramel.
Keeping things big and boozy but dropping the sweetness is a collab with Scotland’s Stewart Brewing (where Good Land’s Jimmy Krekelberg used to brew) and Voyager Craft Malt. Brewed towards the start of 2024, 120 Shilling is a Scotch ale that’s been aging away in freshly emptied Starward barrels. Pouring with a deep ruby hue, it’s filled with rich spices, caramel, and a lasting bready sweetness, which makes for a beer that sits somewhere between raisin toast and Christmas pudding.
