Bottles from Bodriggy are a rare sight indeed, but every so often, the Melbourne brewers release a beer that just doesn’t feel right in a can. Supernova is such a beer, with the imperial stout having spent around eight months ageing in whisky barrels. This means the beer was brewed back in October 2023, and until May, it was ageing away in barrels once filled with Starward Nova whisky, which is the distiller’s flagship single malt.
Now, in the depths of winter, it’s ready for the world. Open one up and you’ll find no shortage of whisky on the nose, with that aroma prominent enough to fool any would-be drinker with their eyes shut. But to taste, that spirit is far less prominent and instead you’re greeted with a mix of molasses, chocolate fudge, spice, tobacco, and cherry all surrounding the warming and quite decadent winter beer.
And, if you're looking for a little more indulgence to combat the cold, Bodo have also made incredibly limited amounts of a cocoa and vanilla version, which you can find out abouthere.
