Right at the start of 2024, The Mill Brewery created a sour tribute to bats and their startling ability to eat fruit that was called Super Fruits. While those sunny days might be a long way behind us, there's never a bad time to ensure you're consuming enough fruit, as my doctor is quite fond of telling me (I've never asked their position on consuming fruit via beer).
Lunar Fruits is a winter response to that summer sour, with the beer keeping its forerunner's penchant for yuzu but adding in blackberry in place of strawberry. Pouring purple with rich red hues running through it, the blackberry brings a sweetness that instantly brings to mind a classic, school-yard juicebox while the Victorian-grown yuzu offers a refreshing zap that leans into the zap on the beer's finish. But while tart, there's plenty of richness and quite a textural mouthfeel to make for a smooth sour that's welcome in the middle of winter.
