This beer likes to make an entrance. When Heads of Noosa released the first iteration of Baltic Porter two years ago, it was launched at an exclusive VIP event. This year, for its return performance, it stepped out first as a pairing with a Wagyu beef dish created by a celebrity chef at a fine dining experience. What a diva.
There’s been some tweaking to the recipe since that first appearance – down from 7.8 percent ABV down to a round 7 – but this beer’s still all about fierce malt character tamed by sub-zero lagering.
The dark liquid’s struck through with deep red and, as you breathe in, you notice that first fragrant hit has shifted from a cola to more of a sarsaparilla, with a dried fruit sweetness adding depth to the aromatics. But while those notes also characterise the first sip, the flavour quickly settles into a soulful crooning of choc caramel as you ride out the evening.
This release is the beginning of Heads of Noosa’s Seasonal Reserve range, so you can expect the Baltic Porter to return each winter – and demand your attention each time.
