It feels like it was only a matter of time before Killer Sprocket and Avnge brewed a beer together. For one, the latter brews out of the former’s home but beyond making beer in Bayswater and loving big IPAs, it feels like there’s a lot connecting the two Melbourne operators. Afterall, both Killer Sprocket’s Sean Ryan and Avnge’s James Isacsson share a love for pop culture and Trek Wars takes the love and rivalry felt for both Star Wars and Star Trek and makes them one.
It also has all the hallmarks of the classic and bold IPAs loved by both Sean and James, with the ABV dialled up to 10.0 percent and the golden, slightly hazy beer provides a pungent mix of old school West Coast resin, pine, grapefruit, floral and herbal notes. There’s also a bit of caramel and breadiness from the malt with further sweetness brought by the level of booze while a substantially bitter background plays a balancing act.
